More rain is expected to fall on Pitt County today as the Tar River continues to rise, forecasters say.
Hal Austin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Newport, said Pitt County should expect from one-quarter and three-quarters of an inch of rain through tonight. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-40s.
“The amounts will not be as heavy as this past weekend, and hopefully the effects will be minimal,” Austin said.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Tar River in Greenville. The river level was 14.5 feet Monday morning, 1.5 feet above the flood stage. The river is expected to rise to more than 16 feet by Thursday afternoon, then begin to fall. Some low-land flooding adjacent to the river and some farmland flooding is expected.
Austin said Pitt County also will catch some heavy winds beginning tonight associated with a low pressure system moving up the coast. Winds will be 20-30 mph and may lead to falling trees due to the saturated ground.
From Thursday through the weekend, the weather is expected to improve. Austin predicts sunny conditions with temperatures in the mid-40s from Thursday through Saturday.
